Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

INL Chapter History:

In early 1970, older Brothers in the Fresno area decided that there was a need to establish an alumni chapter. The decision came about because of differing opinions among the older brothers and the college brothers of Epsilon Beta located at Fresno State.

The original idea to pursue an alumni chapter came from Bro Elija Brewer, whom also was very influential in the establishment of Epsilon Beta in 1956. Bro Brewer contacted the National Office and processed all necessary paperwork to establish Iota Nu Lambda Chapter in the fall of 1970. Bros William Day, Wanamaker Hayden, Matthew Daw, Paul Wiley, Columbus Craig, and Cecil Smith joined Bro Brewer in forming Iota Nu Lambda.

After receiving the news that Iota Nu Lambda had been established as a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the brothers went to breakfast at Carrow’s restaurant on Blackstone. The brothers early meeting place was in the cafeteria of Edison High School where Bros Day, Hayden, Craig, and Smith all taught school. They continued to support Epsilon Beta, but began creating an outlet for the mature brother in the area.

Some of the early community events that were sponsored by Epsilon Beta and Iota Nu Lambda were the Black and Gold Ball, a Water Ski Carnival, Thanksgiving and Christmas basket give-away, and the Annual West Coast Relays dance. Additionally, INL hosted events specifically designed to promote brotherhood and family. Events such as the Christmas Family party, the Summer Family BBQ, and scholarships were a mainstay. It must also be noted that the Alpha wives of the time were very supportive and influential during these early years of the chapter.
